Winter Plumbing Maintenance Tips
Prepare for Winter – Prevent Frozen Pipes, Burst Pipes and Flooded Properties
Our Winter Plumbing Maintenance Tips
Let’s face it, winter is on it’s way and in East Kilbride we get our fair share of long winters with freezing temperatures, ice and snow which can lead to frozen pipes, pipe leaks, burst pipes, back flowing taps and floods!!!!! Your worst case scenario. Your property floods due to a burst pipe after being damaged with the severe drop in temperature in the winter.
However, with some very simple tips and tricks we have put together our winter plumbing maintenance tips checklist which will keep you and your property safe in winter..
In preparation for the winter ahead, you should carry out the following:-
Check for leaks
Having a pipe leak in the winter is the worst time as the cold temperatures make the pipes more susceptible to freezing and bursting, which can lead to flooding in your property.
The number 1 priority is always to check all outdoor pipes and carefully examine any exposed pipes and taps. Also check your indoor taps, sinks and showerheads. This is also important as leaks can come from somewhere inside your home which can indicate a bigger problem; possibly with pipe work, valves, stopcock etc.
East Kilbride gets a LOT of rain so make sure your roof has no leaks and your gutters and downpipes are free from blockages, cracks, splits and that they aren’t offset and that they are generally free flowing.
Arrange a Winter Home Inspection
Arranging a winter home inspection from a professional can diagnose potential problems even before they arise.
We will ensure that all your pipes and taps are safe for the winter ahead giving you peace of mind that your property will be safe this winter.
We also use CCTV drain cameras to inspect drains and see any potential problem areas before they arise.
Prevent Blocked Drains
Blocked drains can lead to pipes freezing as water is unable to flow freely. Some of the most common causes of blocked drains can be easily fixed with a simple precautionary measure.
Use shower drain hair catchers on your bath and shower drains to prevent hair, debris and soap scum build up.
Never pour fats, oil or grease down a drain.
Clear plates from food before washing them or placing them in your dish washer.
Check Your Taps and Sinks
Check for leaks or moisture underneath your sinks. Even a little bit of dampness can be an early sign of a leak or burst pipe.
Leaking taps should be fixed right away. Sometimes, something as simple as replacing a washer can prevent you from having leaking or burst pipes in the winter causing further damage.
Also clear out the overflow of any hair, food dirt and debris to prevent any damage due to overflowing.
Check your Gutters, Downpipes and Outside Drain
Making sure that your gutters and downpipes are clear and that water can flow freely is a great start. Also check them for cracks, breaks, uneven placement and that all your connections between the pipes are water tight.
A leaking downpipe can very quickly cause water damage to your walls and lead to extensive property damage resulting in very expensive repairs and possibly even insurance claims. Don’t let it come to this. Get your property winter safe with out winter plumbing maintenance tips.
Use an Outside Tap Cover
Use an outside tap cover for any outside taps to keep them warm and prevent them freezing over the winter. These can be bought very cheaply from a plumbing or DIY store or online. Alternatively, you can even make them very cheaply from rubber pipe grip or another variation like foam.
You can also use these to cover exposed pipes as well which will work very well in the winterto prevent them freezing.

Thank you guys for doing a great job. I was panicking so much when we came home to the flooding that I didn’t know what to do. Your plumber, Martin was exceptionally helpful not only in stopping any further damage and preventing the water leak but he was also able to remove a lot of the water with some sort of re-direction of the pipe system. That’s when we knew that we had a professional at hand.
We can’t thank you enough and my 6 year old son now wants to be a plumber too so that he can help other people. I’ll let him know where to get his training!

Good advice on winter plumbing tips. Thankfully I read this before the big freeze which I think may have saved us a lot of money and hassle in dealing with burst pipes or worse; a flooded property. Thanks for the tips.
Good advice for the winter. Especially this year. It was very cold and we normally get problems at this time. Not this year!!!
